3 Red Flags to Watch for When Choosing a Plastic Surgeon

Deciding to undergo a cosmetic procedure is a deeply personal journey. Whether you are considering a subtle refinement or a more noticeable change, the right surgeon should help you feel informed, respected, and safe from consultation to recovery.

With endless social media feeds, glowing (and sometimes curated) reviews, and aggressive marketing, the stakes feel high because they truly are. Your safety and your results depend in large part on the hands you choose.

At Regional Plastic Surgery Center, we believe patients deserve more than just a sales pitch; they deserve practical, insider guidance.

In a recent Instagram Reel from our own Dr. Denton Watumull, we presented the three most critical red flags to watch for when choosing a plastic surgeon.

Red Flag #1: They Are Not Board Certified in Plastic Surgery

This is the most critical credential check, yet it is the one patients most often overlook. There is a significant legal loophole in the medical industry: any licensed physician—whether they are a family doctor, a dentist, or an ER physician—can legally call themselves a “cosmetic surgeon.” There is no federal requirement for specific plastic surgery training to use that title.

Choosing a plastic surgeon requires looking specifically for certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS). To earn this, a surgeon must:

  • Complete a minimum of six years of surgical training after medical school, with at least three years specifically in plastic surgery residency.
  • Pass rigorous, comprehensive written and oral examinations that include a clinical case collection.
  • Operate in accredited medical facilities.

If a surgeon’s website uses vague language like “board-certified physician” without specifying which board, or if the staff cannot confirm ABPS certification directly, treat it as a serious warning sign. You can verify plastic surgeon credentials in seconds at the American Board of Plastic Surgery or the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

“The title ‘Cosmetic Surgeon’ can be used by anyone with a medical license. ‘Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon‘ signifies a standard of excellence, safety, and specialized training that is non-negotiable for patient safety,” explains Dr. Watumull.

Red Flag #2: They Don’t Show Before-and-After Photos of Their Own Patients

A surgeon’s gallery is their most honest credential. It is a visual record of their aesthetic style, their consistency, and their experience with different body types. When finding a plastic surgeon, a thin or non-existent gallery should be a major deterrent.

When reviewing a gallery, look for these signs of transparency:

  • Consistency: Are the photos taken with similar lighting, angles, and backgrounds?
  • Diversity: Do they show results on patients with similar anatomy, skin tone, and age to yours?
  • Realism: Be skeptical of practices that show only three or four “perfect” results or those that use stock images provided by breast implant or laser manufacturers.

“If a surgeon is reluctant to show their work, can’t point to relevant cases during your plastic surgeon consultation, or dismisses your request to see more examples, that hesitation speaks volumes,” shares Dr. Watumull.

Red Flag #3: They Pressure You to Decide Quickly or Promise “Perfection”

Plastic surgery is an elective, personal choice—it is never an emergency. A trustworthy practice will never create artificial urgency around your decision.

Watch out for high-pressure sales tactics, such as:

  • Limited-time discounts if you “book today.”
  • Incentives to pay a non-refundable deposit before you’ve even met the surgeon.
  • Staff members who act more like telemarketers than medical professionals.

As Dr. Watumull also cautions: “Be wary of any surgeon who promises ‘guaranteed’ results or perfection. No ethical surgeon can guarantee a specific outcome, as each person’s body and healing process are different.”

The Right Surgeon Makes All the Difference

The journey to improved confidence should be built on a foundation of trust, transparency, and elite medical standards. By avoiding these red flags, you protect not only your aesthetic outcome but also your health.
