Why Loose Skin Happens After Weight Loss and How a Tummy Tuck Can Help
Weight loss is no easy endeavor. Ask anyone who’s attempted not only to lose the weight but to keep it off. It requires focus, consistency, and a lot of work. But the payoff can be great. The health benefits alone are wonderful, but feeling confident in your body is a huge win.
“But many patients are frustrated by the loose skin that remains after they’ve lost weight,” shares Dr. Bruce Byrne, a board-certified plastic surgeon with Regional Plastic Surgery Center, “and, unfortunately, all the exercise in the world may never get rid of that sagging abdominal skin.”
So, in these cases, a tummy tuck may hold the key.
What Causes Loose Skin After Weight Loss?
“Loose skin after weight loss occurs when the skin, which stretches to accommodate weight gain, doesn’t tighten back up,” informs Dr. Byrne. This is often due to diminished collagen, a protein that provides skin elasticity, which can decline due to age, sun exposure, smoking, excessive sugar intake, processed foods, and menopause.
It’s common to experience sagging skin, especially after significant weight loss (over 50 lbs.) or rapid weight loss, primarily in the abdominal area, but also in the upper arms, thighs, and flanks.
What Is a Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)?
A tummy tuck, also called abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure. “It’s not weight-loss surgery, but rather a way to create a firmer, more streamlined tummy after weight loss,” Dr. Byrne explains.
Abdominoplasty differs from liposuction in that liposuction just removes fat deposits to contour areas of your body, and a tummy tuck is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin and reshape your midsection. A tummy tuck also tightens your abdominal muscles, improving your core strength and reducing stress on your back.
Types of Tummy Tuck Surgery
Not everyone requires the same tummy tuck procedure. As Dr. Byrne states: “There are different tummy tuck surgeries to address different loose skin issues.”
Full Tummy Tuck
The most common type of tummy tuck, the full tummy tuck procedure, involves a horizontal incision from hip to hip, just above the pubic area. Excess skin and fat are removed, abdominal muscles are tightened, and the belly button may be repositioned. This procedure most benefits those looking to firm the area above and below the belly button.
Mini Tummy Tuck
A mini tummy tuck is a less invasive procedure that focuses on the area below the belly button. It removes loose skin and tightens lower abdominal muscles with a smaller incision than a full tummy tuck. Recovery typically lasts about six weeks, with most individuals returning to work within two weeks.
Extended or Fleur-de-Lis Tummy Tuck
Designed for individuals who’ve lost at least 100 pounds, an extended tummy tuck addresses loose skin around the tummy, waist, and flanks, and requires a longer incision. It contours the waist, hips, and abdomen by removing excess skin.
The fleur-de-lis tummy tuck is a more extensive version of the extended tummy tuck, featuring both horizontal and vertical incisions for greater skin removal. Both procedures entail a longer recovery time: approximately 6 weeks before returning to work and about 12 weeks before resuming normal activities.
What to Expect from a Tummy Tuck: Before and After
Before your tummy tuck surgery, the most important step is your personal consultation with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons. This is more than just a checkup—it’s a collaborative conversation where we get to know you.
During this visit, we’ll:
- Assess your goals and body contouring concerns
- Evaluate your abdominal anatomy (including skin laxity, muscle separation, and previous scarring)
- Review your medical history to ensure you’re a safe candidate
- Customize your surgical plan based on your lifestyle, recovery timeline, and desired results
Immediately after your abdominoplasty, you should expect pain, swelling, and drainage tubes. You must have someone drive you home after surgery, as well as assist you those first few days. You can expect to return to normal activities, such as light chores and grocery shopping, within 4-10 days after surgery, but anything more strenuous will take closer to 6 weeks.
