Will Implants Improve My Breast Ptosis?

In the modern aesthetic world, breast augmentation with implants is among the most popular surgeries.* When performed by a highly qualified plastic surgeon, the procedure can dramatically enhance the breasts, define the silhouette, and potentially even improve self-esteem. What’s more, breast implants are extremely versatile, with patients able to choose from a variety of types, shapes, and sizes to satisfy their cosmetic wishes.

While it’s common knowledge that breast implants can create a fuller, more proportionate, and more symmetrical bustline, many patients wonder whether implants can also address ptosis. “Ptosis” is the technical term for the breast sag that many women experience as a result of age, weight fluctuations, breastfeeding, and other phenomena. As it happens, breast augmentation with implants can provide a small elevation, allowing the breasts to appear “perkier” and more youthful; however, patients who desire a more significant lift are usually better suited for breast lift surgery.

Also known as “mastopexy,” breast lift surgery aims to combat ptosis by elevating the breasts on the chest wall, removing excess skin, and often repositioning the nipples. Many patients who wish to add volume and shape to their bustline while simultaneously reducing ptosis are candidates for breast augmentation mastopexy (BAM), or a breast lift with augmentation, which combines the two procedures.

In the majority of cases, a breast lift and the placement of implants can be performed in one surgery. However, if a significant lift is required or the patient has undergone major weight loss, it may be safer and more reliable to have the breast lift surgery first and wait three months or more to place the implants at a second stage.

Recently, an internal bra or an absorbable mesh called GALAFlex® has shown to have excellent results in preventing recurrent breast sagging or ptosis after breast surgery. We may recommend this strategy as an adjunct to breast surgery, especially with revision surgery or for those who desire very large implants.

At Regional Plastic Surgery Center & Spa, our surgeons use only top-quality implants to satisfy breast enhancement goals. To learn more, we welcome you to schedule a consultation at our practice.
